Furnace is lined with a rammed or puddled layer of fused magnesia or stabilised zirconium oxide and a layer of bricks or brickwork of fused lime, magnesia, chromite-magnesia or dolomite. Specif. the former layer may be intermediate between the brickwork and a rammed layer of quartzite, corundum, mullite or spinel.
