A process for separating gaseous impurities from a gas mixture, pref. for separating water vapour and CO2 from air, by low temp. gas separation is carried out as follows, the gas mixture is brought into contact, before division into its components with one side of a group of thin membranes, one or more of the products of the separation such as N2 and O2, being brought into contact with the other side of the membranes, the membranes themselves being permeable only to the impurities. Prefd. thin membranes for separation of water vapour is cellulose hydrate. The process works on the principle of diffusion of the impuritis from the gas mixture (or air) side to the other product side.
