In a gas fuelled lighter having a body 1 and a cap 2 and comprising a burner poppet valve 27, a fling 57 urged by a spring 51 against a flint wheel 55 carried by a thumb wheel 5, and an actuating lever 9 which acts on an element 22 having a boss 22a abutting an expansion valve 21 to compress a porous washer 23 and effect flame regulation, the thumb wheel 5, flint 57, and the spring 51 are carried by a lever platform 7 pivoted to the body 1 at 1b and having resilient tongues 7g, 7h which position the platform with respect to the cap 2. The platform 7 has a thumb catch 7a operable to rotate the platform 7 so that a part 7m (Fig. 10) thereof pivots a lever 33 which opens the poppet valve 27. The poppet valve 27 is urged to the closed position by a spring 32 (Fig. 7) which acts on one end of a lever 20 pivotably secured to the body 1 by a screw 19 and having a forked end 20a which engages the poppet valve 27. The actuating lever 9 is pivotably secured to the body 1 by a screw 18 and has a cylindrical part 9a having cam surfaces (39a, 39b, Fig. 8, not shown) which co-operate with further cam surfaces (41a, 41b) on the element 22. In operation, the thumb wheel 5 is rotated and the thumb of the user strikes the catch 7a to rotate the platform 7 and the cap 2. The rotation of the cap 2 causes an aperture 3 therein to be aligned with the burner poppet valve 27 for the passage of flame. The platform 7 and the cap 2 are returned to the rest position by means of the resilience of the tongue 7h which engages a projection 1d on the body 1. |
