摘要 1,098,142. Knitting; drafting; carding engines. A. W. SCHMIDT. Dec. 11, 1964 [Dec. 20, 1963], No. 50557/64. Headings D1C, D1D, D1K and DIN. A pile fabric is knitted on a circular machine by feeding a number or rovings at a variable rate to a carding unit where they are blended and subsequently transferred to the needles of the machine to be incorporated in a base fabric. Two rovings 76, 78 of different colour, quality or other nature are fed by two drawing or drafting sections 72, 74 at a rate which can be controlled to a main cylinder 24 of carding unit which also includes a doffer roll 29 and a fancy wheel 46. The needles of the machine are raised to take a base yarn and to engage in the card cloth of the doffer roll to take bundles of fibres and knit them into the base fabric. The nature of the pile of the fabric can be varied by varying the rate of feed of the drawing sections 72, 74 and this is achieved by driving each independently of the other and both independently of the carding unit which is driven from the ring gear (12) Fig. 8, not shown, on the needle cylinder drive. Each drafting unit comprises a series of spiral and straight gear rollers 100, 102, 104, 106, 108, 110, Fig. 10, which serve to flatten and spread the roving on to the main cylinder 24 of the carding unit. The rollers are driven by an electric motor having a control unit including a rheostat. The rheostat is influenced by pawl and ratchet mechanism periodically actuated as the needle cylinder rotates which causes energization of a solenoid to move a pawl which racks the ratchet wheel influencing the rheostat. Consequently by the provision of reversing dogs, pawls can be rendered operative or inoperative to cause the rheostat to influence the motor to increase and decrease its speed. By increasing the speed of one motor controlling its drafting section and simultaneously decreasing the speed of the other motor controlling its drafting section the total amount of fibres received on the main cylinder can be maintained substantially constant. By feeding fibres of different colours or other characteristics first one and then the other may predominate to produce stripe effects. Other patterns can be achieved and long and short fibres may be interspersed. A third drafting section may feed other fibres which are also intermixed with the fibres from the other sections on the main roller.
