In operation strip 25 passes from the forming rolls 21, 22 and is fed over or under mandrel 15. Strip edge 98, Fig. 5, engages guide 82, which may include a roller (101,) Fig. 6 (not shown), so that tne strip is inclined longitudinally of the mandrel and the strip is wound helically around the mandrel. Adjacent edges (35), 36 of adjacent strip convolutions interlock and are pressed together as the overlapped edges move between the seaming rolls 105, 135, upper roll 135 being able to apply pressure through fluid-operated cylinder 144. Specifically, support roll 72 carries strip 25 over the top of the mandrel where there is likely to be maximum friction. In order to produce pipe 185 using strip of varying width, bolts 63 are adjusted to alter the mandrel angle relative to support 11 and therefore relative to the direction of strip feed, thus changing the pitch of the helical pipe seam. the angle of seaming rolls 105, 135 can also be altered relative to the longitudinal axis of the mandrel by rotating supports 115, 172 to enable pipe of different strip widths to be formed. |
