The particle size of the product, as characterised by iodine adsorption, is maintained constant by continuous IR analysis of the gas at the outlet for CH4 and for C2H2, or CO content and consequent proportional adjustment of the flow rate of combustion gas and/or oil feed, or of the air supply. The flow of combustion gas and/or oil is adjusted inversely proportionally to the CH4 and/or C2H2 content and in inverse proportion to the CO content. The total hydrocarbon content may be measured by flame ionisation detectors and used to control the process. Finer control of the particle size of the carbon black is obtained than by known methods e.g., measurement of thermal conductivity of the effluent gas.
|
