PURPOSE:To enable a driver to easily keep the distance to the preceding running vehicle constant by providing a means which controls the speed of an automobile to keep the size of a circumscribed rectangle constant for the purpose of keeping the distance to the preceding running vehicle constant. CONSTITUTION:The driver operates a read switch to input the picture of the number plate of the preceding running vehicle while confirming the picture on a monitor display device. A circumscribed rectangle of characters of the number plate of the preceding running vehicle is extracted, and the length in the (x) direction of this circumscribed rectangle is denoted as size 0. The picture of the number plate of the preceding running vehicle is automatically inputted again, and the circumscribed rectangle is extracted in the same manner, and the length in the (x) direction of this circumscribed rectangle is denoted as size 1. These size 0 and size 1 are compared with each other. When size 1 is larger, the speed is automatically reduced because the distance to the preced ing running vehicle is too short; but when size 1 is smaller, the speed is automati cally increased. Thus, the distance to the preceding running vehicle is kept constant.
