Two pieces of metal capable of forming aluminides are joined by applying Al in the region between the two pieces at a temp. of 550-700 degrees C. The metal is pref. Ni alloy but may also be Ni, Co or Ti. The Al is applied onto the surfaces to be joined by flame or plasma sparying or as a paint consisting of Al powder suspended in a liquid organic binder which can be removed by heating. The Al may also be applied in sheet form. The pieces are then joined by heating in neutral or reducing atmosphere by producing a hf induced current across the joining region.Used for joining a porous tube to an end piece, for use in sepn. of isotopes as filter or isotope sepn. elements in the gaseous liquid or solid phases. The joints produced are not subject to fissureing, piping, or excessive local shrinkage as in prior art joining methods.
