In a method of producing a non-combustible material, as monofilament or as film, especially for use in producing fabric for protective garments, carbon black particles preferably having a diameter of about 22 m. microns, a suspension of alginic acid and, optionally, rayon are mixed to provide a precursor which is then extruded, solidified and cured, as for example by infra-red heating, or formed into a film. The precursor may include titanium dioxide and aluminium powder. Preferably the carbon black is Shawinigan acetylene black or furnace oil black. The alginic acid is preferably in the form of a colloidal suspension, which may contain acrylamide resin. The alginic acid may be replaced by an alkaline earth metal silicate such as calcium silicate. |
