This device comprises nozzles (14a-14d) for spraying cooling water, a filling mass (2) in which the water sprayed through these nozzles comes into direct contact with the intake air (A), so that the latter is cooled by heat exchange on the surface of the filling mass (2), a tank (4), which collects the water which flows from the filling mass (2), and a pump (10) which returns the water from the tank (4) into the spray nozzles (14a-14d). Furthermore, the device may advantageously comprise a temperature detector (15), which measures the temperature of the cooled air, and a regulating apparatus (16) making it possible to adjust the flow rate of the water flowing from the tank (4) to the nozzles (14a-14d) as a function of the temperature measured by the detector (15). Thus, it is possible to keep the temperature of the cooled air exiting through the outlet orifice (6) constant. This device has the advantage of having small size and weight, compared to known devices of the same power, with energy and cooling water consumptions which are also reduced. <IMAGE>
