The laser tube is filled with a buffer gas such as neon and contains an active substance such as copper. At each end is a sloping window (3,4) and the greater part of the length is enclosed by a quartz glass sleeve (6) filled with insulation (5). A common electrode (7) inside the tube (2) is longer than this sleeve and is connected by two high voltage terminals (10,11) through the tube to the pulse source (8) and the supply source (9) for the heating system. The common electrode can be formed by an internal tube, or internal spiral coil. For a laser operating below 500 deg. C., the tube itself can form the common electrode. In another form, the tube has ribs from end to end extending radially inwards, and another design has coils extending inwards, having cross sectional shapes resembling the cross sections of the radial ribs.
|
