PURPOSE:To obtain the optical modulator which can be easily produced and can be operated at a high speed by connecting two pieces of structures to resonate light in series in the propagation direction of signal light. CONSTITUTION:The optical modulator is constituted by connecting two pieces of the structures to resonate light in series in the propagation direction of the signal light. The constitution to execute control by two control signal is adopted. Namely, signal light waveguides 7a to 7c are constituted of cores consisting of multiple quantum wells of In0.72Ga0.28As0.59P0.41/InP and InP clads enclosing the cores. The waveguide width is about 4mum. The cores of the multiple quantum well structure consist of the layers of 15 periods consisting of the well layers of In0.72Ga0.28As0.59P0.41 and the barrier layers of InP. The waveguides 7b to 7d constitute the ring resonators 6a, 6b and the waveguide 7c connects the two ring resonators 6a, 6b. The optical modulator which can be easily produced and can be operated at a high speed is obtd. in this way. |
