The present invention relates to a device for closing/opening pits, comprising a series of shut-off elements (9) which, when the pit is closed (1), are positioned transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the pit, and edge-to-edge over at least a part of the top opening of this pit. The present device is characterised in that: it comprises guide means (7) in which the shut-off elements (9) slide and which extend longitudinally over the length of that part of the pit which is to be shut off, the shut-off elements (9) being connected together by linking means which allow them to be folded accordion-style, each shut-off element (9) including, on its inside face, rack means (17, 46) which can engage with gear means (24) meshing with the rack means, operated via actuating means (22). <IMAGE>
