PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display is provided to enlarge a cell gap tolerance for lowering the cell gap defect, to boarden a visibility angle and to have high contrast rate, thereby improving the manufacturing yield. CONSTITUTION: A voltage is applied to a liquid crystal layer using an active device. A display mode of the liquid crystal has NW(Normal White) TN type. At least two slit patterns(20) are formed side by side in a pixel electrode(5). A ratio of the area of the pixel electrode to that of the slit pattern is at least 1: 0.3. The line width(d) of the slit pattern is greater than that(w) of the pixel electrode or gap of the liquid cell. The line width(d) of the slit pattern is smaller than four times of that(w) of the pixel electrode. Therefore, the liquid crystal display has the slit pattern without the electrode in the pixel electrode and use the property of the lateral face electric field induced to the slit pattern, thereby compensating for the deviation of the cell gap by the electric field and holding the constant transmissivity.
