PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical device such as a liquid crystal projector having liquid crystal panel cooling structure of high efficiency which is advantageous to make the device smaller and thinner. SOLUTION: An endothermic part 5A of a heat pipe 5 is thermally brought into contact with and is fixed to a cooling fin 4 disposed at one flank of a video forming optical system 3 containing a plurality of liquid crystal panels and dichroic prisms for modulating and synthesizing light from a light source. Further a heat radiating fin 6 is thermally brought into contact with and is fixed to a heat radiating part 5B of the heat pipe 5 penetrating a cover 2A and an exhaust port 7B of a cooling fan 7 is disposed toward the video forming optical system 3 at another flank of the video forming optical system 3. Air from the cooling fan 7 is guided into the video forming optical system 3, passes through the cooling fin 4, is circulated in a cabinet 25 and then is returned to an suction port 7A of the cooling fan 7. At that time, the heat of the cooling fin 4 is deprived by the heat pipe 5 the endothermic part 5A of which is brought into contact with the cooling fin 4 and the heat is transported outside the cabinet 25 and then is radiated from the heat radiating fin 6.
