The method involves filtering a torque signal (c) by a first order low pass filter (B) with a variable cutoff frequency (f) which occupies a minimum or maximum value depending on whether amplitude of the signal is lower or higher than a preset threshold. An indicator signal indicating releasing or gripping of the steering wheel is produced depending on whether the amplitude of the filtered signal is lower or higher than the preset threshold.
