<p>PURPOSE:To improve an encoding efficiency by switching the variable length encoding table of a coefficient value to be encoded next by the variable-length- encoded coefficient value. CONSTITUTION:A variable length encoder 3 is constituted of a delaying device 3a which inputs the preceding encoded coefficient to a selector 3b, selector 3b which selects the variable length encoding table, and selected variable length encoding tables 3c and 3d. The variable length encoding tables of the coefficient values to be encoded next are switched by the encoded coefficient values. Thus, codes can be prepared from the variable length encoding tables which are more suitable to the distributed characteristic of the coefficient values. As a result, the encoding efficiency and a picture quality can be improved.</p> |
