The present invention provides polypeptides containing at least the FcRn binding portion of an Fc region of an immunoglobulin molecule and that have altered amino acid sequences relative to wild type immunoglobulin molecules. The polypeptides have decreased in vivo serum half-lives and can be employe d in various methods.
