PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce electric power consumption by lowering the light quantity of a backlight, and to further reduce the power consumption by stopping an arithmetic processing accompanying the same for a still image. SOLUTION: The light quantity of the backlight is performed by storing input image data into a frame memory 42, performing statistical operation for correcting the image data based on the image data in a histogram creation section 43, correcting the image data of the frame memory 42 based on the result of the statistical operation, calculating a dimming rate and performing the image display based on the image data after filter processing with a time filter section 47 and a dimming rate. At this time, when the input image is a still image, the calculated result of the statistical operation is stored in a memory area 43d and thereafter the histogram creation section 43 is stopped and the time filter section 47 and thence, the image data memorized in the frame memory 42 is corrected and the image display is performed.
