<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positive electrode active material capable of obtaining a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery with high energy density being excellent in high rate charge/discharge performance and charge/discharge cycle performance, and to provide the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery with high energy density being excellent in the high rate charge/discharge performance and the charge/discharge cycle performance. <P>SOLUTION: In the positive electrode active material made of Li-Mn-Ni based complex oxide as a main component, a specific surface area of the positive electrode active material measured by the BET method for the Li-Mn-Ni based complex oxide is 0.3-1.5 m<SP>2</SP>/g.
