A positive active material for a secondary lithium battery, comprising a lithium composite oxide and a transition metal oxide, wherein the transition metal oxide comprises a transition metal having an oxidation number smaller than the oxidation number the transition metal has when it is in its most stable state; wherein the transition metal oxide is present in admixture with the lithium composite oxide wherein the transition metal oxide is MoO2 and the lithium composite oxide is at least one selected from LiCoO2 and Li2NiO2, wherein the amount of the transition metal oxide is from about 0.1 to about 10 parts by weight based on 100 parts by weight of the lithium composite oxide.
