PURPOSE:To obtain a propeller shaft with high productivity and light weight which transmits large torque by a method wherein a fiber reinforced resin (FRP) tube is an outer cylinder, an inner cylinder made of resin joined with a coupling element is provided on one end and the inner and outer cylinders are joined with each other by a tube-in-tube method. CONSTITUTION:A layered structure of an FRP tube 1 of a propeller shaft is designed so that the FRP tube 1 largely shrinks in a peripheral direction when torque functions. Since a shrink amount in the peripheral direction of the outer FRP tube 1 is larger than that of an inner steel pipe 2, compression force occurs on rubber 5 between the inner and outer tubes 1, 2. Since the compression force of the rubber 5 increases in proportion to applied torque, it is possible to delay adhesion fracture shear fracture of the rubber 5 thereby increasing transmission torque. Therefore the same amount of torque can be transmitted by approximately 2/3 to 1/2 length of overlapped length of the conventional inner and outer cylinders 1, 2. |
