PURPOSE:To suppress a noise component and to obtain a natural picture by providing an edge quantity conversion means which converts an edge quantity to be '1' when the absolute value of the edge quantity stays between a 1st prescribed value and a 2nd prescribed value, to be '0' when the absolute value of the edge quantity is the 1st prescribed value and to be a value being a product between the edge quantity and a prescribed coefficient when the absolute value of the edge quantity is the 2nd prescribed value and an addition/subtraction means adding or subtracting the edge quantity converted by the edge quantity conversion means to/from a noticed picture element to the picture processing unit. CONSTITUTION:An edge quantity adder circuit 103 adds a density signal 108 of a noted picture element and a value resulting from multiplying plural different coefficients with a converted edge quantity signal 105 and outputs a saturation state signal 127 representing whether or not the sum exceeds the dynamic range of the signal, and further outputs selects one of sums by using an edge emphasis quantity selection signal 122 from an edge quantity control circuit 130 and outputs a signal Ec subject to edge emphasis. Moreover, a block comprising an edge quantity detection circuit 101, an edge quantity conversion circuit 102 and the edge quantity adder circuit 103 is provided to each color signal and outputs respectively an edge emphasis signal Ec(Em,Ey) in which the edge component of a density signal of each color is increased. |
