PURPOSE:To implement proper maintenance by reading a picture printed on paper or the like and notifying a predetermined state when the picture quality evaluation result reaches the state. The picture quality evaluation section 13 outputs an optimum threshold level used to binarize its contrast picture data and a picture quality evaluation value at its threshold level. The calculated picture quality evaluation value is stored in a list and subject to statistic processing and displays a deteriorated item on a CRT 16 when the picture quality evaluation value is deteriorated than a prescribed reference value. Then a FAX number and a telephone number of a maintenance company of a facsimile equipment and a name data of the maintenance company or the like are read from a battery backup RAM 148 and noticed automatically to the maintenance company.
