[Also in Division B5] A method of coating and impregnating a flexible sheet with e.g. synthetic resin comprises (see Fig. 1), passing the sheet along a channel 7 having a low pressure chamber 27 upstream of at least one duct 21, 22, distributing coating and impregnating material which then moves towards the low pressure chamber 27 against the movement of the sheet. Rollers 15, 16 between which the sheet enters the channel are preferably driven at a peripheral speed equal to the forwarding speed of the sheet and have resilient covers thereon and associated resilient sealing strips 19, 20 to seal the upper end of the channel from the exterior. The channel 7 has inserts 25, 26 of titanium or of an expoxy resin to prevent the coated sheet sticking in the channel. In Fig. 1, three sheet coating units are provided and the sheets coming therefrom are pressed together by rollers 9, 10 to form a compound sheet. In the apparatus of Fig. 2 in whi which two sheets are coated and pressed together by rollers 9, 10, the central channel 31 is divided by a rod 28 to provide a curved channel 32 or 33 for each sheet. Rod 28 is ducted so as to provide coating material for the inner surfaces of the sheets while ducts 35, 36, similar to those shown in Fig. 1, provide coating material for the outer surfaces. To make a compound sheet comprising a greater number of constituent sheets enough ducted rods 28 are provided to give the required number of channels. |
