The pH value of a primary cell having sal ammoniac solution as electrolyte and pyrolusite as depolarizer is stabilized by adding to the depolarizing composition an alginic acid gel or an alginated or a mixture of these. Ammonia is absorbed by the gels, which are converted to fairly thin fluid sols, examples being zinc, aluminium, magnesium, manganese, calcium and alkaline earth alginates. Preferably a metal alginate is used which forms an amine complex salt with ammonia. The gels form thin membranes, containing additives such as carbon black, which membranes envelope individual portions of the electrodes which are disposed concentrically or axially adjacent one another. |
