An axially adjustable steering shaft comprises a shaft 20 connected to the steering mechanism and having welded thereto a sleeve 16 having a hexagonal bore within which a hexagonal shaft 12 connected at 18 to the steering wheel may telescopically slide. In order to prevent rotational play between the shafts, balls 28 and 30 are located in bores 24 and 26 formed in the sleeve 16 and are pressed against opposite surfaces of the shaft 12 by means of ramps 40 and 42 formed in collars 36 and 38 acted upon by a compression spring 44. In a modification, Fig. 4, spring-loaded balls 128 are located in radial passages in the shaft 12 and press against opposite faces in the sleeve 16. In a modification of Fig. 4, the balls are replaced by rollers and the coil springs 144 by rubber blocks. In a further modification (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown), rollers (328) are located in axially extending slots in the sleeve 16 and are acted upon by an axially extending ramp (340) in a collar (336) circumferentially biased by a coil spring (344) anchored (at 345 and 347) in the sleeve and collar. |
