The invention comprises (I) as novel compounds 3-aminoadamantane-1-carboxylic acid and its non-toxic salts with inorganic and organic acids and bases and 3-acetamidoadamantane -1-carboxylic acid and its non-toxic salts with inorganic and organic bases, and (II) the preparation of 3-aminoadamantane-1-carboxylic acid and its non-toxic salts with inorganic and organic acids and bases (a) by hydrolysing 3-acetamidoadamantane-1-carboxylic acid, which may be prepared by reacting 3-bromoadamantane -1-carboxylic acid with acetonitrile in the presence of a strong acid, and converting the base obtained into a suitable salt, (b) by reducing 3-azidoadamantane-1-carboxylic acid, which may be prepared by reacting 3-bromoadamantane -1-carboxylic acid with a salt of hydrazoic acid, and converting the base obtained into a suitable salt, or (c) by acetylating 1-bromo-3-aminoadamantane with acetic anhydride in the presence of pyridine, and reacting the 1-bromo-3-acetylaminoadamantane obtained with formic acid in the presence of sulphuric acid, and hydrolysing the resulting 3-acetylamino-1-carboxylic acid, and converting the base obtained into a suitable salt. Therapeutic compositions having antiviral activity, which may be administered orally, rectally, locally or parenterally, contain as active ingredient 3 - aminoadamantane - 1 - carboxylic acid or at least one non-toxic salt thereof with an inorganic or organic acid or base.
