The invention relates to the antibiotic Lincomycin B which is effective against gram + ve bacteria, is soluble in C1- 8 alcohols, acetone, ethyl acetate, chlorinated hydrocarbons, dioxane; less soluble in water, ether, benzene; and relatively insoluble in saturated hydrocarbon solvents; and which in its essentially pure free base form has a molecular weight of 402 /sB 10; an elemental analysis C = 50.86%, H = 8.48%, N = 7.40%, S = 8.13% and O = 25.13%; shows no U.V. maxima between 220 and 400 mm ; has I.R. spectrum as shown in Fig. 1 and a characteristic papergram pattern (Fig. 2, not shown). It forms salts with inorganic and organic acids, e.g. hydrochloric, acetic, palmitic, pamoic, muric, glutaric and many others. Lincomycin B is present in the fermentation broth obtained by the cultivation of Streptomyces lincolnensis var lincolnensis according to Specification 976,765. It is recovered from the clarified broth by treatment with carbon at pH 8.0, elution with aqueous acetone and extraction of the concentrated eluate at pH 10.6. The extract is concentrated, diluted with water adjusted to pH 1.0 and lincomycin hydrochloride precipitated by the addition of acetone. The mother liquors are concentrated adjusted to pH 9.5 and extracted with methylene chloride and a mixture of lincomycin base and lincomycin B base recovered therefrom. Lincomycin B is separated by counter current distribution of the above mixture in 1 : 1-butanol-water. Further purification may be by chromatography on, e.g. Florisil and the formation of salts particularly the hydrochloride. Lincomycin B or an acid addition salt thereof is an antibacterial for pharmaceutical and veterinary use; is a general disinfectant, a preservative for foods and an animal feed supplement. It may be used with other antibacterials, e.g. antibiotics.ALSO:The antibiotic lincomycin B or a salt thereof, either alone or in admixture with other antibiotics, may be used as a feed supplement to promote the growth of mammals and birds. Lincomycin B or a salt thereof may be used to prevent or delay the souring of dairy products such as milk and cheese.ALSO:Lincomycin B or a salt thereof is a disinfectant and may be added to wash solutions for domestic and industrial purposes. It may be used as a bacteriostatic rinse for laundered clothes, paper and fabrics.
