A composition which may be used in the form of an aqueous solution, dispersion or paste for treating leather comprises (a) a salt of an N, N-disubstituted semi-amide of a di- or tri-carboxylic acid and (b) 0.02-0.4 mol per mol of the semi-amide salt of a condensation product of 5-80 mols of ethylene oxide with 1 mol of an alkyl phenol. The semi-amide salts may have the formula in which A is an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic divalent or trivalent hydrocarbon residue containing at most 8 carbon atoms, M is an alkali metal atom, R and R1 are R11-, R11-CONH-R111-or in which R11 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon residue containing 11-23 carbon atoms and R111 is a divalent residue containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms, and n is 1 or 2. Suitable alkyl phenols which may be reacted with the ethylene oxide are those having the formula in which X is a straight or branched alkyl or cyclo-alkyl radical containing 1-12 carbon atoms and s is 1, 2 or 3. Prior to making up into the treating solutions, dispersions or pastes with soft or hard water the composition may be in the form of a powder obtained by spray-drying aqueous solutions of the composition. Textile materials made from cotton, wool, viscose rayon, cellulose-2 1/2 -acetate, cellulose triacetate, polyamide, polyester or polyacrylonitrile fibres may be treated. Prior to making up into the treating solutions, dispersions or pastes with soft or hard water the composition may be in the form of a powder obtained by spray-drying aqueous solutions of the composition. The treating compositions may also contain water-soluble condensation products of urea or melamine with formaldehyde.
