The invention comprises polyoxy perfluoro methylenes having the repeating unit -CF2O- and their production by reacting tetrafluoroethylene with oxygen in the presence of U.V. radiation, the time of irradiation being 8-60 minutes for every 25 mW of luminous energy at 2537A</>r per sq. cm. of radiating surface, or proportionately for other powers, wavelengths and areas. Treatment of the liquid part of the product with a base enables the product to be separated into neutral and acidic fractions, the latter having terminal -CF2COOH groups derived from initial terminal -CF2COF groups. Solid products may also be obtained.ALSO:Tetrafluoroethylene oxide is obtained by reacting C2F4 with oxygen in the presence of U.V. radiation, the time of irradiation being 8-60 minutes for every 25 mW. of luminous energy at 2537 </>rA per sq. cm. of radiating surface, or proportionately for other powers, wavelengths and areas. Polyoxy perfluoromethylenes are also obtained (see Division C3). |
