The pull P on a rope uniformly wound on a drum 1 is determined by supporting one end of the drum shaft 24 in a bearing 3 between spring plates 6, 7 and measuring the resulting vertical displacement of this end of the shaft, using an electrical transducer. The bearing 3 is located in a forked block 4 which acts through a member 8 on a hinged arm 9, situated in the space between the legs of block 4, and carrying inside its hollow hub a cylindrical magneto-strictive torsion transducer 12 which is geared to the arm 9 at one end and to the frame 5 at the other. The pull P on the rope deflects the arm 9 and twists the member 12, the torque being measured by the magnetostrictive change in transducer 12. The signal is also dependent on the distance a between the rope and the fixed shaft bearing which is measured by a circular potentiometer 16 driven by the drum shaft, and automatically corrects the signal from the torsion transducer 12. The transducer 12 and its associated parts may be replaced by a load cell (20, Fig. 3 not shown). |
