[Also in Division G2] The light source of photo-electric photo-metric analytical apparatus comprises a mixture of a radio-isotope and a scintillating medium. Preferably the source comprises a #-emitter such as C 14 or Cl 36 mixed with PPO DMPOPOP and naphthalene as scintillator. Light from the source 12 passes through the sample 13 and falls on a photomultiplier 16 the output pulses of which in a given amplitude range are counted in a scaler 21. The count obtained is compared with the count obtained using clear water in cell 13 to determine the concentration of a colouring agent in the sample. The light source may produce ultraviolet light, in which case a further scintillator is provided in front of the photo-multiplier to convert the ultraviolet light to visible. A shutter 17 protects the photo-multiplier when the cover 15 is removed. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the light source mixture is in a vial immersed in the sample which is in a bottle. |
