A machine tool comprises a tool magazine 30, a socket 24 and radially movable gripping means 36, 38, 40, 42 on a change arm 34 rotatable through 180 degrees to interchange a tool in the socket with one in the magazine. The chuck 24 is carried on a spindle 12 driven at one of two speeds according to the position of a drive shaft 18. A tool 26 is held in the spindle by a T-headed bolt 64 on a rod 50 urged rearwardly by springs 62 to pull the tool into a conical socket. To release the tool, fluid pressure entering through a rotary joint 51 advances the rod 50 to allow a rack 54 to be operated by fluid-pressure to rotate the T-head to a position coincident with a slot in the tool. The changer 34 is moved axially by a piston 78 and oscillated by a rack piston 82. The magazine 30 is rotated by a motor 100, is locked in a position by a bolt 118, and carries sockets in which tools are retained by spring plungers 112. Each tool carries permanent magnet identification means co-operating with Hall-effect generators in a reading head 126 whereby indexing of the magazine is controlled. The tool gripping means of the changer 34 comprises pairs of rods 36, 38, 40, 42, Fig. 6, which are advanced by rack gearing operated by a fluid-operated double rack 158. The rods enter inclined bores 142, 144 in a collar 140 on each tool. |
