A wiping sheet material comprises a lamination of a non-woven mesh relatively lowstrength scrim 1 of crossed threads 2, 3 forming windows W in the scrim of from about “ inch to 1 inch on a side, and a single ply 4, 5 of wet strengthened creped wadding web adhesively secured to each side of the scrim in fixed engagement with the threads and closing the windows of the scrim from opposite sides of the scrim, the creped wadding webs being otherwise free of the scrim and of each other and having in the creped condition a basis weight of between about 15 and 50 pounds per 2880 square feet and a elongation at break in one direction of at least 70% and up to 150% based on the length of the scrim to which the webs are secured. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the creped webs have puckers in the windows, the puckers being superimposed on and extending in the same direction as the crepe, said puckers having been produced by shrinkage of the scrim. In a further embodiment of the invention, pin embossments extend through the thickness of the laminated sheet material, the said embossments providing a plurality of protuberances. Specified materials for the threads are nylon, polypolypropylene and polyesters. The creped wadding is formed using a conventional papermaking machine and is preferably strengthened by the incorporation therein of a polyamidepolyamine-epichlorohydrin. In the preparation of the sheet material, the scrim is coated with adhesive e.g. a dispersion of polyvinyl chloride by rollers 7 and 8, the coated scrim being united at roller 9 with the two wadding webs, the resultant composite then being directed over pre-heat rollers 11, 12, 13 and 14, through the heated nip of rollers 15 and 16, over cooling rollers 17, 18 and 19 and is then wound up, puckering of the wadding webs being effected by shrinkage of the threads whilst being pre-heated. |
