1,212,653. Change-speed control. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 12 Feb., 1969 [22 April, 1968], No. 7567/69. Heading F2D. A combined I.C. engine carburetter throttle and automatic C.S.G. kickdown control for a motor-vehicle comprises a two-part lever 52, 58 jointly urged by the extended ends 68, 70 of a pre-loaded spring 66 into mutual engagement and pivoted about a common fulcrum pin 50 by an accelerator pedal 20 which engages an end 34 of one part 52 of the lever, the other end of the part 52 being connected by a cable 108 to the kickdown control lever 142, 144 on the C.S.G. 122, and the other part 58 of the lever being connected by another cable 76 with the engine throttle control lever 81, the movement of the throttle lever part 58 being limited by a fixed stop 96 situated in its path of angular movement for engagement therewith at the position corresponding to maximum throttle opening. A lost-motion connection between a cable bead 110 and a conical spring 106 on the kickdown cable 108 is absorbed at the position corresponding to the maximum throttle opening whereby further depression of the accelerator beyond maximum power setting, i.e. when the throttle lever part 58 is stationed against the stop 96, continues to pivot the lever part 52 to operate the kickdown control, which movement is resisted by the springs 66 and 106 and by a further spring 136 at the kickdown lever cable end (Fig. 1B), whereby the driver readily senses the increase in accelerator pedal effort indicating the kickdown position. This is graphically illustrated in Fig. 6 (not shown). |
