The bis-hydroxyalkyl esters of benzene dicarboxylic acids are obtained by reacting a suspension of the acid in an inert liquid with an alklene oxide in the presence of an insoluble ion exchange resin which contains a quaternary ammonium group in the form of the hydroxide of the half-salt of the benzene dicarboxylic acid. The esters produced are polycondensed to give polymers which can be spun to give fibres suitable for textiles, tyre reinforcements etc. Preparation of bis(2-hydroxyethyl)terephthalate. Circled + -N(R)2R'OH A circled - where R is CH3 or C2H5; R' is -CH2- or CH2CH2-; A is OH or a benzene dicarboxylate ion. Reaction is at 115 deg.-160 deg.C/1-30 C/1-30 atmospheres; the molar ratio of acid: oxide is between 1:2 and 1:4. |
