Polymer containing basic nitrogenous groups in the chain or linked with the polymer chain is contacted with a salt or a complex having replaceable ligands, of a metal of Groups IVA to VIII or Group IB of the Periodic System. The polymer may be poly (2-vinylpyridine), poly (4-vinylpyridine), poly (N,N'-dimethylaminoehtyl-methacrylate) or a copolymer derived from the monomer of one of the foregoing polymers with styrene or methylmethacrylate.
