The method for the determination of the frequency transfer characteristic of a communications channel of wide band-pass, uses a number of fixed test frequencies applied cyclically to the input of the channel, and permits the frequency spectrum to be covered simply. The fixed test frequencies are applied at fixed time intervals over a group of frequencies, and after a longer time intervals the group is repeated. The output signal of the channel is applied to one set of oscilloscope plates, and the other pair of plates is fed with a deflection voltage synchronised with the group time intervals so that the frequency spectrum is continuously displayed on the oscillograph screen.
