Class 2(5) A phenol-formaldehyde resin is continuously prepared and is then dried in a heated tube in which it forms a thin film on the walls (this effect is due to the flow properties of the resin and the emitted vapours), the rate of flow being adjusted if necessary by the blowing of gas into the tube, or by the application of vacuum at the outlet of the tube. The resin is then cooled on an internally cooled rotating drum which dips into liquid to cool the outer face of the resin. Volatile matter emitted during drying is recycled, and the concentration of usable reactants in these vapours is increased by separating the resin from the aqueous phase before drying. A flow diagram is given, and a specific preparation is described. The flow of gas-liquid mixtures in tubes is described and a reference relevent to this matter given.
