A process for manufacturing a porcelain body having a low coefficient of thermal expansion and being provided with a glazed surface layer comprising (a) coating a porcelain body with a glaze forming material, the composition of the said porcelain body, and the glaze forming material being such that, when the coating of the glaze forming material applied to the said body is heated, components of the said porcelain body and glaze forming material react with each other during heating to form, in the glaze, crystals having a low coefficient of thermal expansion and (b) heating the coated porcelain body to vitrify and simultaneously to produce a quantity of said crystals having a low coefficient of thermal expansion in the glaze. The porcelain body contains Li2O or an Li2O-containing mineral in the amount of 0.12 to 1.0% by weight of Li2O, and the glaze consists mainly of SiO2 and may contain ZnO. |
