An attachment for fork lift trucks for lifting containers comprises a frame 12 with hinged arms 13, 14 each of which has a rotatable coupling for engaging a container corner fitting and a fixed stud 71. To engage a container the arms are raised by rams housed therein and the studs 71 are inserted into the rear top corner fittings. Further forward tilting of the lifting frame engages the couplings 60, which are rotated by the ram within the arms to their looked positions. Indicators show the operator when the couplers are inserted and locked. The lifting frame is next moved to a vertical position to engage fixed studs 72 with the bottom corner fittings. Figs. 7-11 (not shown) illustrate this series of operations. Fig. 12 illustrates a further embodiment in which two rotatable coupling members 82, 83, operated by a ram 84, are e provided.
