The component has two possible polarizations in given directions which can be exchanged by the application of a reversible field. - A body of material which can be polarized the direction of this polarization being determined in one alignment by a mechanical squeezing under an applied mechanical force on the body and the other alignment by the application of an adequately high electric field. - The polarity may be reversed. Typically, the piezoelectric body of the component may be of a titanate of an alkaline metal e.g. barium titanate.
