The sharpened edge of a length of razor blade Strip is coated by forming the strip into a coil such that only the sharpened edge is exposed at the face of the coil, rotating the coil about its axis, and spraying coating material on the sharpened edge by moving the spray along a path parallel to said face. A holder 58, carrying a flat coil 128 of razor blade strip with its sharpened edge disposed outwardly in a vertical plane, is rigid with a horizontal shaft 290 journalled in a carrier 280 slidably mounted on horizontal bars 218, 220 for movement, imparted thereto by drive means 228, into and out of a spray booth 212. When carrier 280 is in operative position within the latter, a gear 292, rigid with shaft 290, meshes with a gear 300 rigid with a shaft 301 journalled in a structure 302 pivoted on a shaft 314, gear 3C0 being in constant mesh with a gear 312 rigid with shaft 314. A pulley 316 on the latter is driven by a belt 318 for rotating holder 58 when carrier 280 is in the operative position. Lugs 310 on structure 302 are biased against collars 286 on carrier 280 by a spring 306. A spray gun 132, directed downwardly by 5 degrees, is mounted on a bracket 266 rigid with a carrier 268 slidable on a vertical bar 270 and in screwthreaded engagement with a screwed-shaft 272, rotation of which serves to move gun 132 along a vertical path intersecting the axis of rotation of carrier 58. A supply tank (250) for spray material is moved synchronously with carrier 268. The speed of rotation of shafts 272 and 314 is varied by control means to maintain a substantially constant relationship between the angular velocity of the portion of the coil currently being coated and the effective transverse speed of the gun 132.</p> |
