A filter bed 12 is located in closed tank 13 and supplied with raw liquid through box 40, containing overflow 38, and lines 36, 30, with valve 62 closed, and automatically backwashed in three stages when the pressure in chamber 26 upstream of bed 12 is sufficient for liquid to rise up tube 54 to probe 58. Filtered liquid normally flows out of tank 13 through duct 48, over weir 88 in closed vessel 91 and through duct 49 to filtrate reservoir 20, from which it discharges by outlet 50. Alternatively, line 50 may connect directly to duct 49 at high level, so that once reservoir 20 is full the filtrate bypasses it. Liquid contacting probe 58 closes electric switch 56, which opens valve 62 and starts air blower 70. Blower 70 first forces liquid from vessel 91 back through the bed 12, then supplies air behind it agitating the bed. An air cushion 21 is maintained above the liquid in chamber 26 by vent 75, air being entrained during filtering at weir 38, and filter medium is separated from the reverse-flow air which discharges through vent 75 and/or lines 30, 34. Baffle 32 shields line 30. Timer 72 cuts blower 70 after a predetermined interval, enabling the contents of reservoir 20 to flow back through bed 12 to waste through valve 62 (Fig. 4, not shown). Finally, valve 62 is closed by a second switch 66 actuated when the level of reservoir 20 falls below probe 68, and filtering begins again. The filter bed could be backwashed with other than filtrate liquid, and with oxygen or nitrogen instead of air. |
