A # - alkylthio - thiocarboxylic acid ester of the general formula or a polymer of such a compound, is produced by reacting a compound of the general formula with a ketene of general formula C(R 2 ) 2 = C=O in the presence of a strongly acid catalyst at - 50‹ to 200‹ C. in the gas or liquid phase, wherein n= 1, 2 or 3; R 1 and R 3 = aliphatic hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted, R and R 3 are the same as R 1 or H, R 2 = H or alkyl and wherein R 1 and R 3 and/or R and R 4 may be joined together to form a ring. The catalyst employed is either an inorganic acid or a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, preferably hexafluorophosphonic acid. In the examples, #- ethylthio - thiobutyric acid S - ethyl ester is prepared from 1,1-bis-(ethylthio)-ethane and ketene, 1 - ethylthio - 1 - (# - thioacetic acid S - ethyl ester) from 1,1 - bis - (ethylthio)- cyclohexane and ketene, and a polymer of the structure from 2-methyl-dithiolan and ketene having approximately 5 repeating units. |
