A knitted fabric produced on a circular knitting machine comprises loops which are transferred from their wales into an adjacent wale to prevent the formation of ladders, wherein the loops may be cast off from the needles or still on the needles immediately before transfer and wherein one leg of the loop crosses the other leg of the loop between the top and bottom of the loop due to twisting of the loop through 180‹ during transfer. As shown in Fig. 4 transfer bits 26 pick up loops Mv for transfer and move through the needles in the needle cylinder so that one leg of the loop is placed in the hook of the next needle. The transfer bit then rises so that the other leg of the loop is laid behind the needle hook. At this point two crossing points of the legs are produced, one inside the needle cylinder and one outside the needle cylinder. As the transfer bit is further raised to release the loop the crossing point outside the needle cylinder disappears but the crossing point K 1 inside the needle circle remains. The transfer bits are mounted in a rotating bed 66 eccentrically mounted with respect to the needle cylinder and this bed may be rotated with a peripheral speed less than or greater than that of the needle cylinder to transfer the loops either forwards or backwards. |
