Aminonitriles are obtained by a process which comprises (I) reacting a mixture of reactants comprising (a) a basic nitrogen-containing material consisting of ammonia, a primary, secondary or polyamine having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, in the form of a salt with a strong acid; (b) formaldehyde; and (c) hydrogen cyanide in an acidic environment under autogenous pressure at a temperature of 40- 120‹ C.; (II) cooling at least a part of the reaction mixture from step (I) to a temperature below 40‹ C. and separating the aminonitrile from the mother liquor; (III) treating at least a portion of the mother liquor from step (II) with additional basic nitrogen-containing material to achieve a pH greater than 7 at a temperature below 30‹ C., and recombining the thus treated portion with the remainder of the mother liquor; (IV) replenishing the mixture from step (III) with reactants substantially in the same molar proportions as they were consumed in forming the aminonitrile; and (V) recycling the mixture from step IV back to step (I). After step II and stripping of hydrogen cyanide from the remaining liquid phase, the entire liquid phase or a fraction thereof may be fed to a water stripper to remove excess water and the stripped phase may then be treated as in step III, the remainder of the unstripped phase being recycled to the main reactor stream. Nitrilotriacetonitrile is a preferred product of the process; other compounds which may be prepared include ethylenediamine tetra-acetonitrile, diethylene triamine penta-acetonitrile and methylamine diacetonitrile. |
