Cartridge filter has cylindrical bell shaped housing containing a filter element. The outlet for the filter comes from the centre of the element and is in the form of a piece of pipe passing through the housing. The top end of this inside the clean liquid space has a cover fixed onto it and liquid enters it by means of a series of holes around the side. A collar is sliding fit on this tube and is spring loaded. The element presses down against this collar and is held by the tension of the spring below and of other springs above. When the element is removed, the collar is pressed up by the spring against the rim of the cover over the outlet pipe. In this position it covers the holes leading into the pipe and thus prevents oil draining out of the filter during an element change. Used esp. for use as a recycle oil filter on motor vehicles e.g. on their hydraulic systems. The mechanism prevents the drainage of oil from the unit when the top is removed in order to make the element accessible.
