Effluent gases from Claus plant, in which H2S is converted to elemental sulphur, are cooled to 70-130 degrees C., and then subjected to an additional catalytic conversion to S to reduce their sulphur content to less than 30%. Subsequently, an afterburning to SO2, or another catalytic conversion to S are applied. Active carbon or coke is used as a catalyst; it is periodically regenerated. By this method, the Claus plant effluents can be economically purified.
